2.Parts of keyword Planner:

There are two parts of keyword planner

A. Discover new keywords: It generates a list of keywords centered around the seed keyword on which search for ideas is applied. The search can be refined based on categories mentioned in the refine Keywords section. Also a wide range of search can be done using the broaden your search section. This will be covered in detail in section 3 functions and keyword research.

B. Get search volume and forecasts: This has three sections

  • Forecasts: Displays the search volume ,clicks and impressions and the cost of bidding for the mentioned keyword in terms of Avg. CPC and Max. CPC.It also mentions the CTR(click through rate) which is a measure of the number of clicks received for a given number of impressions.
  • Negative Keywords: What are negative keywords??These are keywords which help in driving relevant traffic through your ad groups to the website by showing the ad only for relevant search queries.Let us take an example suppose a website sells kids shoes and bids on the keyword “shoes”,buyers who are looking for adult shoes are also going to see the ad and may click on it but it wont convert as they are looking for different category of shoes.you will get billed for a non relevant search to the services you offer. This is where negative keywords come into play and help in preventing display of the ad for only relevant search queries by adding the non-required search query to the negative keyword list.
  • Historical Metrics:It displays the Average monthly searches,Adwords competition,ad impression share and top of the page bid cost and bottom of the page bid cost.

The search volume and forecasts can be customized to target a specific location by selecting location.

C.Grouped Keyword ideas: This section helps in finding groups of keywords related to the seed keyword which have been searched and are available for the given service.Groups can be added to ad campign plan from here.

3.Functions and Keyword Research :

Keyword ideas are generated using the “Discover New Keywords” section.Entering a seed keyword gives a number of keyword suggestions related to the seed keyword. It displays the Average monthly searches, adwords competition,ad impression share, top of the page bid cost and bottom of the page bid cost. The number of keyword ideas generated is limited as compared to other paid keyword research tools. It is primarily meant for keyword research for planning ads for Adwords. A newly introduced section refine keywords helps in filtering keywords based on the prepopulated search categories. Let us see an example

Refine Keywords lists different categories for the displayed keywords and we can filter them out from here.

Also search can be broadened from the broaden search section suggesting to include other specific keywords,

Keyword can be added to a plan from here by selecting the keyword and selecting a plan as can be seen in the below image.

Also you can add  Negative keywords from more section.

These results can be targeted based on the following four fields:

  • Location

  • Search Network
  • Date Range

Keyword ideas can be downloaded in CSV format which displays competition index ranging from 1-100.

The displayed list can be sorted in ascending and descending order by clicking on the headers.

5.How to interpret search volume forecasts

Search volume display is displayed by relevance which means they are displayed by the number searches executed for them. Using this data the more a keyword has search volume, the more is the competition resulting in more conversions and that is what we want.
